Guess what?! Today is the birthday of none other than Dr. Seuss himself, Theodor Geisel! Who does not love Dr. Seuss? I for one have always adored his words and believe he meant them not only as cute stories for children, but lessons for us all no matter what our age. If the genius gent had still been alive today he would have been 108 and more than likely would have still been putting pen to paper instructing us all in his own creative way.
My children cut their reading teeth to Dr. Seuss. I still remember reciting these words to my now 25 year old:
“Hand, Hand, Fingers, Thumb
Dum Diddy Dum Diddy Dum Dum Dum”
And of course who can forget Horton’s devotion to Lazy Mayzie’s unhatched egg. If only we could all be more like Horton:
“I meant what I said
And I said what I meant…
An elephant’s faithful
One hundred per cent!”
Can you believe there are some who dwell among us who DO NOT care for Dr. Seuss? It truly saddens me to report that Daddy Owl does not appreciate the musings of the great doctor and just like when the dog picture was hung on the wall (see Symmetrical Sadness), tends to say, “That’s stupid” whenever anything Dr. Seuss related is brought up. Then again he also naysays The Sound of Music and S&G’s classic Bridge over Troubled Water. How am I even married to this man?! I love him more than life and all, but not liking Dr. Seuss is well…nothing short of blasphemy.
Happy Birthday Dr. Seuss. It may be your birthday, but it seems you are the one who continues to gift us all with your words long after you have gone:
“Today you are you!
That is truer than true!
There is no one alive who is you-er than you!”
